Species Peonies

These are the types often found in their native locations in the wild. Many of these have been used in hybridizing of the many large flowered and named varieties that are familiar to us in our gardens.  There are many herbaceous (non-woody) species, and a few woody species. These are some of our earliest peonies to bloom in the garden.  They often have a single and slightly smaller flower than named varieties, but often their colors are beautiful and distinct.
