Cheers to Winter! Hoping all our customers are having a great holiday season and looking forward to a new gardening year! We are closed until early April, but please contact us if there is anything we can help you with before then.

Well, the spring equinox is here, but really, all us gardeners are truly looking forward to warm spring showers, sun and flowers! We will be opening for the season on or around the 15th of April, though we of course will not have our full stock of annuals and other tender crops until May (it sometimes snows in April!) That is our “official” opening, However, we do have some lovely Helleborus blooming now in the greenhouse for sale, sorta an early bird of a spring teaser. Pictured here are some Helleborus x ‘Ivory Prince’, a beautiful hybrid with early white flowers and sturdy foliage. If you just can’t wait for another few weeks, feel free to stop by and pick up some of these beauties, we are always here working in the greenhouses, plus, it’s a great time to see bulbs blooming in the garden!

I was thinking the other day of the colors of fall, and how we have such bright foliage and fruit color. The colors are all vivid reds, yellows and even some pinks. No one would argure that they are extremely vivid colors in the bright fall sunshine, yet somehow these bright colors all have a distinct earthy tone to them, far different than the bright reds and pink of our summer flowers.
We still have a great selection of shrubs and fall foliage interest here at the nursery.
Some of my favorites are ‘Winter Gold’ Ilex, a decidious Holly with bright orange fruit on a 5′ tall shrub, the orange fruit persists all fall and into winter.
We all think of trees as the giver of fall foliage color, but shrubs can do the trick too! Some favorites are the standard Burning Bush, but also Spirea. One variety called ‘Tor’ is specacular in spring with its white flowers and round green leaves, but it also stands out in the fall with a deep wine red display of foliage. There are many options for fall interest in the garden, you can still have color, even without the flowers of summer!

I’ll be posting occasionally through the summer on these exciting combos. After all, it’s all about color, and how color matches it’s neighbor. Above we have the new Pretty Much Picasso Petunia, with its deep purple throat picking up the color of its neighbor, Tradescantia, a vining foliage plant. The feature of Pretty Much Picasso was it’s green edge to the flower, but sometimes it’s hard to see against the green foliage, so I chose to focus on the deep purple center instead to pick the color of the Tradescantia. Subtlety in Pots!

With Memorial Day weekend coming up, now is the traditional planting time for your vegetable garden. We have a wide selection of heirloom and hybrid tomatoes available in individual pots for sale. If you want to try only one of each kind, instead of having to buy a pack, come see us! We will have over 60 types! Some of my favorites are ‘Sun Sugar’, a hybrid yellow cherry tomato with the same sweetness as ‘Sun Gold’, but with more crack resistance. It’s sweet as candy in the summer! Another favorite is Olpaka, a paste tomato that is an elongated red heirloom variety that also makes excellent fresh sauce, it practically melts in the sauce pan. For a delicious slicing heirloom, I love ‘Persimon Orange’, a orange heirloom with a distinct fruity taste. Also great tasting, the ‘Green Zebra’ variety is a striped salad size heirloom with an excellent flavor, and is ripe when green! For the person that likes odd vegetables, we have a tomato called ‘Garden Peach’. This one is pale yellow and actually has a fuzzy skin! Also a favorite hybrid of mine last season is the Mountain series of hybrids. I grew Mountain Pride last year, and despite the horrible time with late blight, this one preformed quite well, and in my garden it still produced despite the less-than-ideal rainy conditions of last summer.
We also have many, many varieties of Peppers. One of my favorites in the sweet category is ‘Carmen’ This is a heavy producer of long red double sided sweet peppers perfect for grilling. ‘Jimmy Nardello’ is a more narrow version of a long sweet red, and has some of the most sweet flavor I’ve tasted, great for slicing on salads. As far as hot peppers go, we have lots of those! We have 10 kinds of habaneros alone, along with many other kinds of interesting smaller super hot varieties. One of my favorite hot peppers is ‘Crimson Hot’ another elongated red hot that makes a good griller to mix with ‘Carmen’ sweet for a little kick. ‘Garden Salsa’ is a thick walled medium heat variety with great flavor if you’re looking for something different than Jalapenos to mix with fresh salsa. We also have Poblano and Pasilla peppers too.
With all this heat, now is the time to get your veggies in the ground and get them growing in anticipation of that first juicy summer tomato!

Peonies that is! Our rockii hybrids are finishing up blooming, and now we are on to the American hybrids, the Daphnis, Saunders, and Gratwick hybrids. They have been in bloom for us for a few days now in the gardens. I’m sure this will be busy weekend at Linwood Gardens Festival of Tree Peonies (www.linwoodgardens.org) With the predicted heat coming this week, I’m sure that this weekend and the following weekend will be the best weekends for viewing. If you’re thinking of taking a trip to our nursery, you should plan on visiting Linwood Gardens also, it is a very special and beautiful place with an exquisite collection of Tree Peonies.
If you’re visiting Linwood, you should take a trip to visit us also. We are only 20 minutes from there, just across the valley. We are stocking in limited supply, some of the hybrids that you may see at Linwood.
Daphnis hybrids we currently have:
Kronus, Leda, Iphigenia, Hephestos, Boreas, Gauguin, Tria.
Saunders hybrids we currently have:
Vesuvian, Roman Gold, Golden Bowl, Red Currant, Banquet, Spring Carnival, Marchioness.
